The year 2024, an Olympic year, continued to be transformative for Westlake. From scientific breakthroughs to new connections with the global academic community, we've demonstrated what can be achieved when talented and dedicated individuals unite around a shared vision.
In October, we hosted the 2024 Westlake Forum on Higher Education, bringing together university leaders, scholars, and students from across the globe under the theme "Navigating Changes and Challenges in Higher Education." The forum emphasized the critical value of international collaboration and exchange while brainstorming how universities can adapt and thrive amidst global challenges such as geopolitical tensions, deglobalization, and emerging technologies. These discussions underscore the need for openness to new ideas, unique perspectives, and diverse talents from every corner of the world in order to realize the vital role universities play in shaping a shared future. These messages inspired us to continue building and strengthening these global connections.
This past year also brought significant milestones for Westlake. We are proud to have recruited 30 of the world's top scientists last year. By the end of 2024, the number of professorial faculty at Westlake has grown to 240, further strengthening our academic and research capabilities. We welcomed our third cohort of 98 undergraduate students, celebrated a record-breaking 537 newly admitted doctoral students, and saw a notable increase in international scholars on campus. Our diverse community now represents 37 countries and regions, making Westlake a truly global university. Our first cohort of undergraduate students are completing their full-semester study-abroad experiences at our partner institutions around the world. Additionally, our summer programs attracted over 500 outstanding young talents from high schools and universities worldwide, helping to nurture the next generation of leaders and innovators.
Academically, we reached new heights. Now Westlake has the authority to award PhDs in four distinct areas and bachelor's degrees in seven different subjects. These programs reflect our unwavering commitment to developing a research-oriented, world-class university that meets the needs of an ever-evolving world.
Our researchers continued to make extraordinary progress in 2024. From advancements in flexible electronics to breakthroughs in cancer immunotherapy, their work exemplifies the pioneering spirit that defines Westlake. For the sixth consecutive year, several of our young scientists were honored on the prestigious "Innovators Under 35" list by MIT Technology Review, a recognition of their exceptional talent and innovation.
We are particularly proud of the rapid development of our Medical School, which is emerging as a leader in integrating life sciences, engineering, and medicine to address critical global health challenges. Its growth symbolizes the bold ambition and forward-thinking mindset that are at the core of Westlake's mission.
None of these achievements would be possible without the collective commitment of the Westlake community: our students, faculty, staff, and supporters. Every milestone we reach is a testament to your hard work, creativity, and dedication, and I am deeply grateful to each of you for your role in our shared success.
The ongoing worldwide challenges remind us of universities' vital role as beacons of hope and discovery.
