Biography: François Ballaÿ obtained his PhD in 2017 from University Clermont Auvergne, France. He was then a postdoctoral fellow at Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research, Peking University and at University of Barcelona, Spain. Since 2022, he is an associate professor ("Maître de conférences") at University of Caen Normandie, France. Ballaÿ's main area of research is Arakelov theory and its applications to Diophantine geometry. He is also interested in positivity problems in algebraic geometry.

Title: Introduction to heights of algebraic points

Abstract: Height functions are fundamental tools in Diophantine geometry that measure the arithmetic complexity of algebraic points on algebraic varieties. I will give a gentle introduction to height functions and present some motivation for their study. If time permits, I will describe some aspects of Arakelov theory that bring geometric intuition to the study of heights.
