Speaker:Tommaso Ruggeri, University of Bologna

Biography:Professor Ruggeri is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Bologna, Italy, where he became a full professor of mathematical physics in 1980. He is a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, the Academia Europaea, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, the European Academy of Sciences, and the Academy of Sciences of Bologna, Naples, and Messina. Professor Ruggeri’s research activity is dedicated to problems of mathematical physics and applied mathematics; in particular, he has given significant results on the propagation of non-linear waves and in classical and relativistic continuous media.

Title:A Nonlinear Approach to Viscoelasticity via Rational Extended Thermodynamics

Abstract:

First, is presented a brief survey of the theory of Rational Extended Thermodynamics (RET), which serves as a bridge between Kinetic theory (mesoscopic scale) and non-equilibrium continuum theory (macroscopic scale). RET is closely related, from a mathematical standpoint to symmetric hyperbolic systems with a convex entropy law. Subsequently, is presented a recent work concerning a hyperbolic model of nonlinear viscoelasticity. The differential system is entirely determined by the universal principles of RET, exhibiting a symmetric hyperbolic form, and ensuring the existence of global smooth solutions for appropriately small initial data. In the linear case, the equation for viscous stress reduces to the well-known Maxwell model, representing a plausible nonlinear extension of the Maxwell-type model. The total stress, however, adheres to a nonlinear Zener model.
